GYROTONIC® Methodology

It’s probably best that we leave it to the originators to describe what Gyrotonic method is:

GYROTONIC® methodology allows users to stretch and strengthen muscles, while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening connective tissues in and around the joints of the body. These exercises are synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, thus enhancing aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promoting neuro-muscular rejuvenation.

GYROTONIC® exercises offer complete freedom of movement. Exercises are performed on the Professional Pulley Tower, and the system is fully adjustable and can meet the needs of many people with varying body types and levels of strength. The even and constant resistance in the handle unit and pulley tower, (through the triple reduction in the pulleys), completely eliminates the jarring that takes place at the beginning and end of exercises performed on conventional exercise equipment, when many injuries occur. The circular, spiraling and undulating movements that characterize the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® help to increase the functional capacity of the spine, contributing to a spherical and three-dimensional awareness, resulting in increased equilibrium.

GYROTONIC® equipment and exercises after many years of intense study and self-exploration. This unique method offers the same benefits also acquired by practicing yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and tai chi, but is not derived from these exercises modalities.”

In short, the Gyrotonic method of exercises is very similar to doing weights on a weights machine except the movements are all circular in motion resulting in full articulation of the joints while strengthening and stretching the ligaments and muscles. Through circular motions, the jarring effect of linear motions associated with most exercise patterns are avoided. It is a unique system of equipment and exercises that incorporates movement principles from yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and tai-chi.

The Gyrotonic exercises are coordinated with specific breathing patterns to match the cardiovascular requirements of the movement within the set of exercises. The emphasis of Gyrotonic is not on the building of muscle mass but to stretch, strengthen, tone and increase flexibility of muscles, tendons and joints through a range of weighted circular motion in the same way each joint on the human body was meant to function through its natural range of motion.

The benefits of Gyrotonic exercises include:

  • Increased joint mobility and range of motion
  • Creating a healthier, more flexible spine
  • Improvement of core strength
  • Strengthening of nervous system

Gyrotonic exercises are a great complement to those athletes in sports requiring rotational movement of the limbs or torso such as golf or tennis.
